Our Story

A Turning Point

In 2020, the world reached a turning point. As communities confronted long-standing racial injustice, it became clear that Black voices, Black generosity, and Black changemakers deserved greater visibility, stronger connections, and lasting investment. Giving Black was born from that moment.

From a Conversation to a Global Network

What began as a single conversation quickly grew into a global network. By 2021, Giving Black had convened international conferences and in 2022 we launched The Giving Black Podcast, creating a global platform where Black philanthropy, storytelling, and community leadership could be seen, heard, and celebrated.

Today, Giving Black connects philanthropists, community leaders, researchers, fundraisers, and allies from around the world. We amplify Black philanthropy, honour Afrocentric traditions of generosity, and inspire collective action to strengthen communities for generations to come.

Charity Begins at Home

I grew up in Brixton, South London, fortunate to live in a vibrant African and Caribbean community where generosity was part of everyday life. Our community had its challenges, yet we worked together, lived together, and shared what little we had with each other. That’s what made us strong.

When I became an international fundraiser, one question came to mind almost immediately: Why do so few organizations engage Black donors? That question set me on what has become a decades-long journey to demonstrate the power and potential of Black philanthropy and Afrocentric fundraising practices.
