Bitter Issues and Promising Truths: My First Week as Chapter President of AFP GTC.

My cousin in Lagos shared a Yoruba proverb with me over the weekend. It was a phrase I had never heard before. In trying to persuade me to do something I was totally reluctant to do, his words flowed out of his mouth in Yoruba and nestled into my mind in English:
"If I use my mouth to bite a piece of kola nut and offer it to you, you may not accept it, but if I use my mouth to speak the truth to you, you'll not reject what I say.”
His point to me was that certain aspects of life are somewhat trite and other aspects of life are entirely crucial. He wanted me to land on the side of the crucial over an issue I considered to be trite. In the end he won. I acquiesced. I accepted his truth.
I am writing to you, in my capacity as Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Toronto Chapter (AFP GTC) President. My message is not about kola nut proverbs. It's about my first week of volunteering, once again, at the proverbial AFP GTC, after an almost four year boycott.
First of all, I owe deep gratitude to the many people who have reached out to me with amazing words of encouragement and support. I have tried to personally respond to all of your messages, texts, phone calls, and social media posts, and would like to THANK YOU DEEPLY for your commitment to racial equity. Also at this time, I wish to thank the AFP GTC team and my AgentsC Inc. colleagues both of which have been amazingly patient and understanding as I establish a new pattern of work and seek to be swift and ambitious in how this work should be done.
Just over a week into my role as Chapter President, I have some markers to share:
- AFP Global has agreed to pursue a formal apology to me, @Nneka Allen, and @Muthoni Kariuki. Global is also looking into removing AFP GTC's 10-Star designation - an award given for strong equity standards, which our chapter clearly lacks.
- I have met virtually with the current AFP staff team, who have worked impressively to keep our Association going in the face of immense difficulty - without a board, and Executive Director. Our first in-person meeting will occur this week.
- The June AFP GTC Annual General Meeting was postponed because we do not have a board to speak of. We are aiming for a July AGM instead, but only if we can present a roster of at least five interim board members within the next two weeks. Otherwise, our AGM will be shifted to September, 2023.
- Conversations about the recruitment of a new Executive Director at GTC, led by AFP Global, were underway prior to my appointment. I have had the pleasure of meeting with and making an offer to a great candidate to lead our Association on an interim basis. Please watch out for an announcement this week.
- I have communicated with fellow Chapter Heads in the USA who continue to petition for racial equity within AFP GTC. These Chapter heads are also making their voices heard by petitioning AFP Global to take stronger and more consistent steps. I am particularly grateful to Amy Rowell, Anna January, Nicholas Reising and Taylor S. Wilmoth, MPA, CNP, AFP Chapter Presidents in the USA who have taken direct action. I know colleagues The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) - Nova Scotia Chapter were the first to express their concern, and last week I was pleased to see AFP Edmonton & Area Chapter speak out against racism within AFP.
At the beginning of my role on June 1st, I wrote that I became a volunteer at AFP GTC in 2009, soon after arriving to Canada in 2008. Lately, I came across my original AFP GTC membership card. It was dated, December 2008. Just five months after emigrating from London, England. Memories came flooding back, and with those memories came the reality of AFP GTC today.
There have been some bitter issues to accept over the past, and there will be a few more to come. However my hope is that when all is said and done, we will all see promising and encouraging truths that are easier for us to accept about our Chapter.
